Yes, it's that magic time again!
Badger baseball 2008 will begin on Wednesday, April 30 at 6:30 pm, at Stanley Park, with an exhibition game against Opera.
The first regular season game will take place on Wednesday, May 7, details TBA.
Stanley Park will be our home field this year, sharing with Opera. We are playing eight home games and seven away (although at least one of the away games will be against Opera at Stanley). The other two fields will be Riverdale and Field #3 at Greenwood. (Our old Field #4 is now a dog-walking park.)
Fees are not yet determined, although they are likely to be in the range of $30 for the season per player. We need some new bases.
Please let me know as soon as possible whether you will be joining the Badgers this year. If you are, make sure I have your correct address, including postal code, and phone numbers. And email. (If you don't get this message, let me know right away.)
There was extensive and heated discussion over the rulebook this year, but few changes.
We have changed the distance between the bases to 55' this year. We said 50' last year, but whenever we measured it out, it was obviously too short.
We have clarified that, as long as they are behind the encroachment line, outfielders may play deep or short, or wherever they like, as long as they don't actually switch positions during an inning. So the right centre fielder has to stay to the right of the left centre fielder, at least a little bit. And so on.
The rule remains unchanged which says that a runner may not be tagged out after passing the commit line between third base and home plate. There was a strong feeling among some captains that this is a safety issue.
I don't know, I just have a funny feeling that this could be the year we win every game.
Semper arribare!
